If you have followed the previous 9 tips, you should now have a good idea about your core target keywords. You also have the ability to add pages and measure what keywords ARE finding your web site. So now it's time to take some direct SEO action!
By the way, it's a great feeling when you first prove to yourself that SEO actually works - we all remember the time 10 years ago when we started getting page 1 rankings in search engines DIRECTLY as a result of things we had done.
So this tip is about finding a small but important group of related keywords and getting ranked by writing some content.
Get ranked for some core keywords
- Pick a core keyword that you would like to rank for. For example, 'colour-blind web design'
- Add variations and synonyms 'color blind web site', 'web design for daltonism', 'colour blind safe colours', etc.
- Group the keywords into related groups (lets say 3 groups) - e.g. one could be 'colour-blind + web design', one could be 'colour-blind + web sites' and one could be 'colour blindness, color-blindness, daltonism'
- Write one page for each - making sure the title has the core keyword in and that you use the keyword at least 4 times plus at least 3 more variations (including the title, headings, etc). Use the keyword in every paragraph and a variatoin in every sentence
- Keep it readable! (bear in mind that people skip-read web pages a lot and don't notice repetition as much as you might think)
- Keep the pages at least 200 words long - preferably longer
- Add the keywords (if you can) to the meta description (which should be a meaningful sentence summarising the page around 150 - 200 characters long)
- Link the pages to each other - using the keyword for each target page as the anchor text (the visible bit) - for example this is a link to a page on keyword research
- Make a link on your home page to one of the pages, including the core keyword (colour blind web design) as the anchor text
- Link to the page using the core keyword as anchor text from any outside web page or social network page that you can
The above, SHOULD get you noticed and indexed for the keyword - or at least one or two of the variations. By all means contact Chilli Digital if it doesn't work - or if it does! We can help make the process much easier if you are interested in going further!
